Yes, unfortunately, our donuts are no longer available at any Whole Foods Markets in the Northern Ca. region.
Ever since Whole Foods contracted with a local bagel wholesaler to develop and produce vegan donuts, our product has been replaced by these "donut imposters" in every store. One by one, all 12 stores from Reno to Sacramento and down to San Ramon cancelled their orders. As the owner of Pepples Donuts, I was told it was something "they had been working on for a long time." I was also told by a couple of the buyers at the time they cancelled their orders that there was pressure to replace Pepples with "the in-house product."
The new WFM vegan donuts feature "organic nothing" and are fried in GMO Canola oil, sources say. "the 99 cent price tag is more popular with consumers" one WFM employee stated, as well as "No, there are no Organic products in our bakery section". Sad, but true. A recent visit to the Oakland store, the last store to stock Pepples' Donuts, showed that our product had sold out. Reports from the Berkeley store confirmed the same. Sales were strong. Alas, however- the call had already been placed to cancel the little Organic local product and replace it with the house-contracted GMO product. On a positive note, a couple of their flavors are quite good- for a low-quality ingredient profile product; cherry and vanilla crumb. Very nice, both of them! (although reminiscent of Pepples' cherry and vanilla cookie.) Hats off for that.
Fortunately, Pepples Donuts is undaunted in our resolve to produce an Organic product without compromise.
